Canning Town is a great choice for first-time buyers and commuters

Canning Town is finally achieving the recognition it deserves, as reported in the Metro. Our office is situated in the heart of the area, so please contact us for any of your property needs.

The fact that artisan baker Breadmeister has opened a shop next to Canning Town station shows how much this part of east London is changing.

Situated to the north of the Royal Docks, it’s undergoing extensive regeneration. About 10,000 homes are being built across Canning Town and neighbouring Custom House.
In addition, shops, cafés and bars have opened in and around the Hallsville Quarter in the town centre with more to come.
The housebuilding programme is going great guns and buyers from across London are moving into the new developments, lured by below average property prices and fantastic connectivity.

The station is on the Jubilee line and DLR, just two stops from both Canary Wharf and Stratford. The Elizabeth line station at Custom House is in walking distance – as is the IFS Cloud cable car (previously called the Emirates Air Line) that takes you over the river to Greenwich Peninsula.

After nine years of renting in south west and central London, Emily Wilson, who’s 34 and a campaigner for an animal welfare charity, took the plunge and moved into a home of her own at L&Q at Brunel Street Works in Canning Town. She bought 25 per cent of a two-bedroom shared ownership apartment with a full market value of £530,000.

Why Canning Town?

I loved the development. I’d spent lots of my free time riding the DLR on my way to viewings and wanted to buy through a major housing association, as I knew that homes would be aimed at first-time buyers. When I received an email about L&Q at Brunel Street Works, I liked the look of the location and size, so booked a viewing straight away. I then brought my parents to see the apartment and we all loved the layout. I paid the holding fee the very same day.

What made you buy?

I spent much of the pandemic by myself as my only flatmate went back to live with family. During this time, I realised that I was ready to live alone but after looking at the price of flats in central London, I realised that buying on the open market on my single income was impossible. I decided that looking in a more residential area would be the best option.

How did you hear about shared ownership?

I joined a choir and met a girl who had bought through the shared ownership scheme and couldn’t have been more positive about it. After she showed me Share To Buy, an affordable home ownership property portal, I subscribed to everything and started browsing different options.

So what do you like best about your home then?

It’s so spacious and I’ve loved deciding where everything should go. I’d been in rental properties for so long that it was so exciting to finally be able to buy my first pieces of furniture and also I get to try my hand at interior designing. I’m only a few minutes from Canning Town station so always feel safe on my walk home. The location is so perfect that it has even turned into a family joke – as lifelong West Ham fans, they get excited that I live near where it all started.

Future plans?

I want to live here for a long time, so I’ll think about staircasing in a few years. I love being in the city and I don’t plan on leaving any time soon.
